Difference between Simple Distillation and Short-Path Distillation

Difference between Simple and Short-Path Distillation

Nowadays, short-path distillation is very widely used in several kinds of fields, for example, chemical, industrial, food-making, textile and other fields. And besides, there is still another distillation method, that is simple distillation.

What is the difference between simple distillation and short-path distillation? Short-path distillation can effectively solve many problems that simple distillation technology can’t solve, and improve the shortcomings left by simple distillation technology. Now let’s go see their differences together:

  1. Short-path distillation technology has improved the requirements of simple distillation environments. Since short-path distillation reaches a certain temperature difference, it can be separated at a plurality of temperatures. Simple distillation requires strict requirements and can only be carried out after controlling the boiling point of the material.

  2. Simple distillation bubbling and boiling are common, and it can cause spillage or harm to the health of workers. Short-path distillation can freely evaporate on the surface of the liquid membrane, and the pressure required for operation is small. Without these problems, short-path distillation can be easily performed.

  3. The types of materials used in short-path distillation technology are increasing, which is different from simple distillation. Simple distillation is only suitable for certain materials.

  4. The distillation time required is different, the short-path distillation heat is short, and in the actual application operation process, the cost is further saved, and the purification process is also high.

Distillation is a mass transfer process that separates components by utilizing the difference in volatility of the components of the liquid mixture. There are distillate everywhere, in chemical labs, industrial factory, even at home and so on. Today, we are going to see how to make distillate at home together.

Cannabis distillates are concentrated extracts that are almost always close to 100 percent pure. Distillates often have an extremely high THC content, but some distillates are instead created with the intention of producing a high CBD content. Since cannabis distillates are concentrated, only a little bit needs to be consumed as compared to consuming raw cannabis flower. Fortunately, both medical and recreational cannabis users can experience nearly immediate effects after consuming distillates utilizing distillate dabs.

How are distillates created though and what processes are utilized to produce these concentrated products? To create cannabis distillates, different extraction processes can be used including “short path distillation” and “short path wiped film distillation”.

Short Path Distillation Process

Regarding the short path distillation process, users must operate a specialized set-up that allows them to properly distribute the extracted cannabis material. A heated flask facilitates the intake of cannabis extract material. As the extract material is fed through the flask, an increased amount of heat is applied. A vacuum is also used so it can help draw vapors up into what’s called “fractionating tubing”.

From here, the extract material flows through the fractionating tubing, which is then directed to a condensing tube. If individuals want to improve their product’s refinement, the extracted cannabis material can be run through the distillation process several times.

Short Path Wiped Film Process

Another extraction method is the short path wiped film process, which focuses on the melting points of cannabinoids. So what happens during this specific distillation process? First, users must utilize a compact, specialized system that consists of a feed vessel, which serves an important purpose. This feed vessel is meant to send the bulk of the extracted cannabis material through what’s called a “heated evaporation vessel”.

Within this evaporation vessel is a rotating wiper blade, which is used to evenly distribute the extract material onto the vessel’s walls. Then, inside the center of the evaporation vessel is an internal condenser. This is the area in which different parts of the extract material are separated and concentrated.

The wiper system works to move the extract material through the heated vessel and it evaporates into the internal condenser, which is converted into a liquid. This specific liquid accumulates, is collected and is then deemed a distillate. To catch excess terpenes and other plant material, another evaporator is used to distribute these compounds into their own designated flasks. What’s interesting about both of the short path distillation processes is that no solvents are required. These processes do their part to divide cannabis into high concentrations of CBD and THC in a solvent-free manner.

How to Make Distillate at Home?

There are several ways to make distillate at home, and now let’s see both of them in different ways.

  1. Fill a stainless pot about 18L volume with half of the pot water. Place a glass bowl in that pot and keep it suspending, which means the bowl can’t touch the bottom of the pot. You could also put a shelf under the bowl to keep it suspend. During the heating process, keep the water not boiling. Put a ice bag on the cover to condense the vapour into liquid-phase. Then when the bowl is full of liquid-phase vapour, you could take the bowl out. Pay attention to not being burned when you take the bowl out.

  2. Get two big water bottles and one of them needs to have a crooked neck, in order to prevent water flowing back. Fill one of the bottles with all water and then connect the two bottles together with battalion commander. Have a 18L volume stainless pot full of water to get water evaporated into vapour and put the bottle that full of water in the pot. Tilt the bottle thirty degrees. Tilt the upper bottle and lean against the pot. Put a ice bag on the bottle that is not in the pot, in order to condense the vapour into liquid-phase. When the vapour bottle is almost full of water, you can take it out. Pay attention to not being burned during the process.

Above are two of the ways of how to make distillate, you could also try other ways to make distillate at home.
